Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate an ability to communicate appropriately with patients, health professional and the public;
  2. understand the modes of delivery of health care services in Australia (in general) and in NSW (specifically);
  3. demonstrate an appropriate, professional attitude as a medical student, recognizing that the primary professional responsibility is to the health interest of the patient (ie not being rude, turning up on time, etc.);
  4. apply the basic ethical and legal constraints that structure the interaction between health care professionals and patients;
  5. interact safely with patients and professionals in the health care system, with due regard for hospital and system safety and OH&S standards;
  6. recognise potential 'risk situations' and be able to respond appropriately;
  7. demonstrate initial skills in the approach to taking a structured medical history;
  8. recognise key features of the history and communicate these to other health care professionals;
  9. demonstrate initial skills in the initial management of uncomplicated wounds and simple trauma;
  10. demonstrate an understanding of the basis of clinical pharmacology and use of drugs in clinical medicine;
  11. apply a knowledge of basic anatomical pathology to clinical medicine.
