Unit Description	The languages of Asia are both linguistically fascinating, and of great practical and cultural importance to the global environment of the 21st Century. This unit overviews the diversity of languages in Southeast Asia and East Asia, and describes the main sociocultural and linguistic similarities and differences among them. The unit teaches appropriate linguistic techniques for analysing characteristic features of many of these languages, such as tones, classifiers, serial verb constructions, honorifics, and non-alphabetic scripts. Both national and minority languages are covered. The unit is supported by a variety of online tools including online assessment.
Materials	Textbook information will be displayed approximately 8 weeks prior to the commencement of the teaching period. Please note that textbook requirements may vary from one teaching period to the next.

Learning Outcomes (LO)

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

describe the diversity of languages and language situations in Southeast Asia and East Asia;
identify and explain similarities and differences in linguistic structure among the languages of Southeast Asia and East Asia;
apply appropriate techniques of linguistic analysis to simple data sets from Asian languages; and
identify and explain some of the important sociocultural aspects of various Asian languages.

1	Knowledge of a Discipline Linguistic concepts and analytical techniques are taught in lectures, study notes and readings, practised in tutorial and online exercises, and assessed via all assignments.
2	Communication Skills Part of the unit content concerns communicative styles in various Asian languages, especially Malay and Japanese. Communication skills are assessed through assessment tasks.
3	Global Perspectives Unit content includes a good deal of sociocultural and historical information on East Asia and Southeast Asia. Materials and discussion topics will underline this and candidates will be expected to reflect this in their assignments.
4	Information Literacy Students are encouraged to search for information, in hard copy and online, through library sources and the internet to supplement their reading for their research project/essay. It is assessed in the essay.
5	Life-Long Learning This unit provides the opportunity for students to identify, evaluate and implement personal learning strategies and study skills that will be valuable throughout their life.
6	Problem Solving Applying concepts of linguistic analysis to unfamiliar data sets is taught, practised and assessed in all assessent tasks.
7	Social Responsibility The learning activities in this unit will encourage students to develop their sense of social responsibility in the area of intercultural relations and the recognition of diversity.
8	Team Work Cooperative online discussions promotes appreciation of and skills in participating in collective problem solving. It is assessed in online activities.
