Unit Description

This unit looks at the current linguistic and social situation of Australian Aboriginal languages, including not only traditional languages but also Aboriginal English and Kriol. After a brief introduction to the linguistic structure of these languages, this unit focuses on a range of applied topics, including; language maintenance, decline and revival, language use and social practices, and Aboriginal language issues in education and the law.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. understand the complex relationships between social groups and languages specifically within Aboriginal societies;
  2. understand the diversity of special language varieties and their sociocultural contexts;
  3. understand factors involved in the changing situation of the languages;
  4. understand factors involved in language death and decay;
  5. understand the different ways that Aboriginal people have responded to the 'invasion' of the English language;
  6. understand current debates and controversies concerning languages and education; and current policies on Aboriginal languages in relation to education and the law.
