Unit Description

This unit allows students to explore, in depth, a selection of Japanese manga and anime with reference to their cultural context. Students will complete a survey of relevant academic literature. This will be followed by an investigation of a particular aspect of the academic study of manga/anime and a detailed analysis of a single genre or work of manga/anime. As part of their study in this unit, students will have the opportunity to read or view excerpts of a variety of manga and anime.

Materials Textbook information will be displayed approximately 8 weeks prior to the commencement of the teaching period. Please note that textbook requirements may vary from one teaching period to the next.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. analyse and discuss the key academic literature on manga/anime in general;
  2. analyse and discuss in detail the key literature in one aspect of the academic study of manga/anime and one major genre; and
  3. show a sophisticated understanding of the cultural context in which manga and anime are produced and consumed.
