Unit Description

This is an advanced unit and caters primarily to those students who commenced their Japanese language studies at UNE at higher than beginners' level (i.e. JAPN201 or higher) or to native speakers of Japanese. In JAPN422, students study written and spoken genres of Japanese and further work is done on the 1006 Kyôiku Kanji and Jôyô Kanji. There is a variety of learning activities suitable for both advanced learners of Japanese as a second language as well as native speakers of Japanese. Another aim of the unit is to enhance students' overall communicative competence in Japanese by improving their ability to self-monitor, self-correct and manage conversations, for example.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. comprehend and summarise information on current issues related to Japan and Australia;
  2. discuss issues studied through authentic materials dealing with current affairs and socio-cultural aspects of Japanese society;
  3. analyse current issues and express one's views on them in a written essay format utilising the Jôyô Kanji;
  4. recognise the need for sociolinguistic competence and sociocultural competence in the language, as well as grammatical competence;
  5. recognise his/her errors, and improve accuracy by developing the ability to self-monitor and self-correct;
  6. improve communicative competence in Japanese and independent learning skills.
