Unit Description

Due to the complexity of Japanese script, at this level it is necessary for students to devote intensive study to the skill of reading. Therefore, in this unit students undertake extensive reading in Japanese in a variety of genres (including some authentic texts).

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. display reading skills and strategies in a variety of genres (including some authentic texts) through extensive reading practice;
  2. display writing skills in a variety of simple genres in response to readings;
  3. demonstrate receptive knowledge of 200-300 new characters from the second half of the Kyôiku kanji and productive knowledge of 100-120 new characters; and
  4. show awareness of aspects of socio-linguistic and socio-cultural expression relevant to inter-cultural communication in Japanese at this level.
