Unit Description

Continuing on from the first trimester intermediate Japanese language unit, this unit aims to develop intermediate-level communicative competence in Japanese through the following four categories of knowledge/skills: (1) intermediate listening and speaking skills in Japanese (e.g. various conditional and additional honorific/humble verb forms); (2) intermediate skills in reading and writing Japanese (consolidating previously studied approximately 280-300 kanji, learning an additional approximately 120-130 new kanji); (3) aspects of Japanese society and culture relevant to inter-cultural communication at intermediate level and; (4) language learning strategies.

Materials Textbook information will be displayed approximately 8 weeks prior to the commencement of the teaching period. Please note that textbook requirements may vary from one teaching period to the next.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate lower intermediate aural and oral skills in spoken Japanese;
  2. show lower intermediate skills in reading and writing Japanese; and
  3. show an appreciation of relevant aspects of Japanese society and culture.
