Unit Description

Continuing on from the first trimester 100-level Japanese unit, this unit aims to develop elementary communicative competence in Japanese through the following four categories of knowledge/skills: (1) basic aural and oral skills in Japanese (including expressing probability, moderating language, potential form of verbs, suffixes like -tai, -sugiru-, -to omou and -deshoo); (2) basic skills in reading and writing in Japanese (consolidating hiragana, katakana and the 75-100 kanji studied in the first trimester unit and learning an additional 75-100 kanji); (3) awareness of aspects of Japanese society and culture relevant to inter-cultural communication and; (4) language learning strategies.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. converse on a number of topics using simple Japanese;
  2. express himself/herself in written Japanese on a number of topics using Hiragana, Katakana and 150-200 basic Kanji;
  3. read simple text in Japanese; and
  4. demonstrate understanding of some basic socio-linguistic differences between Japanese and English.
