Offered off-campus in odd numbered years. Those students who are intending to study the texts in Italian, rather than in English, should have completed ITAL102 or ITAL100.

Unit Description

This unit acquaints students with the works of the major authors of 19th Century Italy, tracing the development of Italian literature from the end of Romanticism to the development of modern narrative. This unit is now available in English to students with no knowledge of the Italian language.

Materials Textbook information will be displayed approximately 8 weeks prior to the commencement of the teaching period. Please note that textbook requirements may vary from one teaching period to the next.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. critically analyse literary texts, showing a greater critical acumen and providing fuller critical apparatus than those students undertaking the unit at 300-level;
  2. display an advanced knowledge of 19th Century Italian literature;
  3. demonstrate an advanced knowledge of the socio-political situation of modern Italy; and
  4. demonstrate a greatly expanded Italian language ability through the reading of modern Italian texts (for those students choosing to study the texts in Italian rather than English).
