Unit Description

This unit will explore the detective novel as a literary form. Popular since the twenties this genre has been used by eminent writers such as Sciascia and Eco as a metaphor for the 'search for the truth'. This unit will present three contemporary authors: Sciascia, Eco and Camilleri, as a basis for literary analysis. This unit is now available in English to students with no knowledge of the Italian language.

Materials Textbook information will be displayed approximately 8 weeks prior to the commencement of the teaching period. Please note that textbook requirements may vary from one teaching period to the next.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. critically analyse literary texts;
  2. demonstrate a knowledge of Italian detective literature;
  3. display a knowledge of late 20th and early 21st century socio-political situation of Italy; and
  4. expand their Italian language ability through the reading of modern Italian texts (for those students who will be studying the texts in Italian).
