Unit Description

This unit is aimed at understanding the complex world of Muslim women today. Among the themes are: the Islamisation of women in Asia, women in politics, both at grass-roots and elite levels, Muslim women in the workforce, feminist perspectives - western and Muslim, stereotyping, , Muslim women and religious participation, Muslim women and seclusion in a modern world.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. exhibit a critical and more informed understanding of the role and position of Muslim women in both the Middle East and Australian contexts;
  2. present well-reasoned, well-expressed and analytically rigorous arguments in answer to the main problem solving exercises that are posed in the assessment tasks; and
  3. apprehend the complexity and rationale of Islam's approach to women against the background of human rights, notions of individual liberty, gender equality and so on.

Students will be assessed on the style of writing, clarity of writing, expression and development of ideas, and referencing.
