Unit Description

This unit seeks to introduce students to the history of Malay/Indonesian. Topics include: Malay and its relatives; Old Malay; Classical Malay; Colonialism and the development of Malay; nationalism and the rise of Indonesian; language planning; diglossia in Indonesian; the influence of English and other foreign languages and the relationship between regional languages and Indonesian. Many of the topics will include the study of original texts that illustrate various aspects of the discussion. Through study of Indonesian history students will gain a greater understanding of the various forms of Malay/Indonesian in the Indonesian archipelago (and beyond). This unit does not require a knowledge of the Indonesian language as all materials will be offered in English.

  2. recognise and understand the relationship between existing forms of Indonesian/Malay and their historical antecedents;
  3. demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the diversity of Indonesian/Malay; and
  4. demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the historical and socio-linguistic context of Indonesian.
