Unit Description

The unit examines the socio-economic and political factors influencing Indigenous Australian health from colonisation to the present. It explores issues and concerns related to systemic bias, structural violence, culture shock, cultural vitality and cultural safety in relation to general health organisations and community controlled services. There is an emphasis on problem-solving and information analysis.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate an understanding of the history of colonisation in Australia and its aftermath;
  2. identify and appraise the influence of broad social processes on Indigenous Australian health;
  3. appraise and analyse factors which influence mainstream service delivery to Indigenous Australian communities;
  4. identify issues related to cultural vitality and self determination in Indigenous Australian health; and
  5. formulate and justify self-management structures in health services for Indigenous Australian people.

Students will examine a range of issues impacting upon Indigenous communities today both nationally and internationally, and is part of understanding global heritages. 		True

By completing the assessments, students will be provided with the necessary lifelong skills to be able to research, write and discuss social issues. These skills can be transferred to any discipline, and will be useful in any research positions. 		True True

Students will be assessed on their ability to conceptualise problems and formulate a range of solutions to both research and presentation. Collect, collate and analyse relevant information to assist problem solving. 		True True

As a researcher students will provide balanced and accurate research. In addition, students will be taught that they have a social responsibility to question and challenge some 'facts'. This will be assessed and taught through their responses to the assignment questions and discussions online postings. 		True True True

Students will practise working collaboratively and network effectively to solve problems in the online environment taking initiative and leading others in this environment.
