Unit Description

The unit examines the socio-economic and political factors influencing Aboriginal health from colonisation to the present. It explores issues and concerns related to systemic bias, structural violence, culture shock, cultural vitality and cultural safety in relation to general health organisations and community controlled services. There is an emphasis on problem-solving and information analysis.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. evaluate an understanding of the history of colonisation in Australia and its aftermath;
  2. identify and appraise the influence of broad social processes on Aboriginal health;
  3. appraise and analyse factors which influence mainstream service delivery to Aboriginal communities;
  4. determine issues related to cultural vitality and self determination in Aboriginal health;
  5. formulate and justify self-management structures in health services for Aboriginal people.

Students will be taught communication skills through written and oral feedback on the essay and participation component of the unit. Students will be assessed on the style of writing, clarity of writing, expression and development of ideas, and referencing. Students will examine a range of issues impacting upon Indigenous communities today both nationally and internationally, and is part of understanding global heritages. 		True False False

Students will be taught, and directed, to relevant indigenous literature and how to assess its validity. Students will be assessed (through the essay and online participation) on their ability to identify and critically analyse the literature. 		True True False
5 Life-Long Learning
Through completing the assessments, students will be provided with the necessary lifelong skills to be able to research, write and discuss social issues. These skills can be transferred to any discipline, and will be useful in any research positions. These attributes will be assessed in all of the assessments (written skills; analytical skills).
