Unit Description

This unit provides opportunities for critical and comparative analyses of recent major forums of policy review and inquiry in relation to Indigenous Australia. Case studies are under taken which match student's interests in order to facilitate detailed and critical analyses of policy reforms and their outcomes. Emphasis is placed on providing skills and understandings relevant to professional roles and responsibilities. There is an emphasis on problem-solving and information analysis.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. develop a knowledge base about various conceptual frameworks relating to policy formulation, implementation and review processes impacting on Indigenous Australia;
  2. exhibit a theoretical knowledge and understanding of the major debates involving Indigenous Australian public policy;
  3. engage in critical analyses of recent major inquiries relating to Indigenous social issues;
  4. identify current issues affecting Indigenous Australian communities as revealed in major commissions of inquiry, and through them, consider the importance of community responses and achievements for achieving satisfactory outcomes; and
  5. identify case studies and engage in detailed critical analyses of major and contemporary Indigenous Australia policy issues.

Students will be taught communication skills through written and oral feedback on the essay and participation component of the unit. Students will be assessed on the style of writing, clarity of writing, expression and development of ideas, and referencing. Students will practise their communication skills by completing the assessment tasks.

Students will examine a range of issues impacting on Indigenous communities both nationally and internationally and is part of understanding global heritages.

Students will be directed to relevant literature and taught how to assess its validity. Students will be assessed on their ability to identify and critically analyse the literature.

By completing the assessments, students will be provided with the necessary lifelong skills to be able to research, write and discuss social issues. These skills can be transferred to any discipline, and will be useful in any research positions.

Students will be assessed on their ability to deconstruct the assignment questions and to integrate theory and literature into their answer. Students will need to work out how to address the questions and what the most appropriate material is to answer the questions.

7 Social Responsibility
Students will be taught about their professional responsibilities as a researcher to provide balanced and accurate research. In addition, students will be taught that they have a social responsibility to question and challenge some 'facts'. This will be assessed and taught through their responses to the assignment questions and discussions in online postings.

Students will practise their teamwork skills by participating in online discussion postings. They will be required to discuss the weekly topics with their fellow students in a thoughtful and respectful manner (practise).
