Unit Description

This unit promotes awareness of aspects of cultural difference, diversity and complexity amongst traditionally oriented First People societies in Australia and considers the continuing effects of colonisation on them. An examination of the assumptions and ideas that have been used to justify and rationalise the displacement and control of First Peoples in Australia is also undertaken. The unit provides important conceptual and background information relevant to a range of professional environments.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. identify the strengths and weaknesses of various perspectives when considering issues in Indigenous Studies;
  2. develop an appreciation of the diversity amongst Australia's Traditional First Peoples;
  3. develop an awareness of the specific factors that have shaped and contributed to Australian colonialism in the past and in contemporary times; and
  4. explore and consider colonial and post colonial issues impacting on First Peoples in Australia and to an extent, in the international context.

Students will develop a knowledge of First Peoples by examining traditional Indigenous Australians' pasts and cultures from the time of British colonisation. This unit focuses on the collision of two worlds (Australia's First People and European) and the impact this had upon traditional Indigenous Australians.

Students will be taught communication skills through their assessments eg, clarity of writing, expression and development of ideas and referencing. Students will practise their communication skills by completing the assessment tasks.
