Unit Description

This unit is designed to allow students to pursue individual research interests. Students will work with a member of staff to design, conduct and present a minor research project. Students must consult with the School of Humanities or School of Arts, and secure the permission of Head of School or nominee, prior to enrolment.

To provide experience at postgraduate level in researching and presenting a sustained piece of original research work. In order to provide a pathway to higher degree research such as MA or PhD level. The unit is assessed both on form and content - Research 50%, Writing 50%.

The unit will emphasise the progressive development of knowledge, and the diverse ways in which it is moulded by continuing research, scholarly conversation and often vigorous debate. As such, the unit does not focus on a finite body of knowledge. Rather it encourages open enquiry, ongoing debate and a desire to seek out more and question further. These are independent learning skills which can be applied to other learning situations throughout life.
