Unit Description

Students in this unit will be exposed to the theory and skills required for effective use of specific models of intervention used by social workers, including brief intervention, crisis intervention and disaster response and the solution-focused model. The unit will cover the underlying beliefs, the strategies and techniques, and the articulated goals of each model. A critical review of the strengths, value, limitations and applications of each model will be conducted. Students will also demonstrate their skills in responding to client situations using each of the models.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. describe intervention models used by social workers and identify situations when their use is appropriate;
  2. demonstrate the ability to use the models' established skill sets in practice situations;
  3. articulate critically informed limitations of specific intervention models with regard to populations served and practice domains; and
  4. describe best practice intervention models for intervention in a context of crisis, with particular focus on rural environment settings.
