Unit Description

This unit presents students with the theoretical frameworks and practical skills for group work and community development work. The first part of the unit focuses on assessing the need for a group, understanding group formation, development and processes and closure. The second part of the unit examines the role of community development in relation to social work practice, with a focus on the current socio-economic climate, theoretical frameworks and practice skill development.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. describe the processes involved in group planning, formation and development;
  2. demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical frameworks used in group work;
  3. demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of community work;
  4. identify the skills needed for community work practice in a range of community work situations; and
  5. use online technologies to communicate developing ideas with peers.
