Unit Description

This unit presents social work direct practice skills and examines interpersonal communication in relation to social work theory and practise. Students will be exposed to issues and considerations relevant to social work with individuals and families.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate an understanding of the main principles of basic counselling micro skills used in social work practice;
  2. understand and demonstrate the use of empathic and reflective listening skills;
  3. demonstrate successful closure skills in casework;
  4. demonstrate and assess skills through reflexive learning; and
  5. use online technologies to communicate developing ideas with peers.

This is a core social work unit and specifically teaches the theory and practice in relation to the discipline of social work and is assessed in assessment tasks 1 and 2.

2 Communication Skills
This unit teaches students social work micro and interpersonal skills which are practised at the residential school and assessed in assessment task 2. Cooperative peer feedback will be an important part of tutorial/online discussion as students develop their understanding of the unit material and are assessed in assessment task 3.

All social work theory and practice units are taught in the problem based learning framework where students are expected to make use of a variety of sources of information and contribute to group learning. This attribute will be assessed in all three assessment tasks.

6 Problem Solving
All social work theory and practice units are taught in the problem based learning framework where students are exposed to a problem and are expected to make use of a variety of sources of information to examine the biopsychosocial implications of the case study. This process is examined and practised in assessment task 1.
