Unit Description

This unit examines human development across the lifespan to further social work students understanding of the changing needs of individuals in relation to their broader relationships with family, community, and society. Particular attention is paid to the biopsychosocial model to assess need at different life stages and the role of the social worker.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate an understanding of the main developmental phases that individuals pass through from birth to death;
  2. assess the needs of individuals at different stages across the lifespan;
  3. critically analyse how individuals needs are influenced by the community and the broader society in which they live;
  4. assess the role of the social worker across the lifespan; and
  5. demonstrate ability to communicate ideas to peers in group settings and to be able to work within a group setting.

All social work theory and practice units are taught in the problem-based learning framework where students are expected to make use of a variety of sources of information and contribute to group learning. This attribute will be assessed throughout all assessments.

6 Problem Solving
All social work theory and practice units are taught and practised in the problem-based learning framework where students are exposed to a problem and are expected to make use of a variety of sources of information to examine the biopsychosocial implications of the case study. This process is examined in assessment task 1 and 2.

Social responsibility is a core social work principle which will be taught and practised throughout the unit.
