Unit Description

The aim of this unit is to extend and further develop students' clinical knowledge and skills to the level expected of a beginning Registered Nurse. This unit will particularly examine assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care and administering medications.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. discuss the roles, responsibilities and scope of practice of the Australian Registered Nurse;
  2. explain the legal, ethical, professional, organisational and political contexts of healthcare in Australia in preparation for beginning level clinical practice;
  3. demonstrate effective communication skills related to client contact, working as a member of an interdisciplinary team and accurate documentation of clinical records;
  4. plan, implement, manage and evaluate evidence-based nursing care based on a comprehensive health assessment;
  5. refine skills in interpretation of diagnostic tests; and demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the principles of drug absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion; and
  6. apply infection control principles and occupational health and safety guidelines to all nursing care with special emphasis on basic wound care and manual handling.

Students will practise communication during participation in online activities, face-to-face activities and during the clinical practice. Assessment of communication will occur in the written assessment and demonstration of competency during the Clinical Skills Assessment.

Students engage in activities where global perspectives will be discussed and debated and assessed through the Clinical Skills Assessment.

4 Information Literacy
Students will be taught how to access and interact with online materials using LMS and also how to use the Library online resources effectively. These will be assessed through the written assignment and the Clinical Skills Assessment.

Students will be encouraged to develop skills to enable them to set learning goals for their current course and for their future professional development in discussion with their peers and their clinical placement supervisor. This will be assessed in the clinical placement.

Students will participate in a curriculum that is based around a case study/problem-solving approach during learning activities in the online and face-to-face environments. Their ability to solve problems will be assessed across all of the assessment tasks.

Students will participate in simulations and practise during their clinical placement covering legal, ethical and socially responsible nursing practice. This will be assessed during their clinical placement.
