Unit Description

This is a foundation unit that introduces students to the development of effective communication in the health care context. It addresses communication with clients, colleagues, families and significant others and deals with conflict resolution, cross-cultural communication and professional responsibility and accountability. It assists students to identify barriers to communication and the causes of communication breakdown and offers ways for them to approach overcoming these problems in their professional environment.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts of effective communication;
  2. identify the essential components of verbal, non-verbal written and electronic communication within a health care setting;
  3. explore key issues that lead to communication breakdown and conflict within a health care setting and suggest possible solutions based upon their reading and research;
  4. evaluate the communication needs of people with specific health care problems and needs, eg people whose ability to communicate is compromised; and
  5. synthesise their learning in this unit and apply it to specific situations to improve communication.
