Unit Description

This unit is designed to facilitate an understanding of the healthcare service provision in Australia in the context of social, political, and economic influences, which have shaped and continue to shape that system. The unit also compares healthcare systems operating in different countries of the world.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. identify and interpret the historical influence on the provision of health service facilities in Australia;
  2. explain the structure and functioning of government including the complex interrelationships between different levels of government in Australia;
  3. display a knowledge of the distribution and structure of health care services and resources in Australia;
  4. list established data bases and sources of information which identify utilisation patterns and the demand for health care services;
  5. explain the impact of social systems on health status and health care provision in Australia; and
  6. discuss how economic and policy developments influence health care provision and resource utilisation.

Students will engage in learning theory and practice related to health systems and this is central to the health management professional role and are basic competencies required of health service managers. Knowledge of these competencies will be assessed through the written assignments.

Students will practice communication during participation in online discussion with students and unit coordinator. Teaching incorporates the range of presentational approaches. Assessment of communication will occur in the written assignments.

3 Global Perspectives
Text book content and readings provides international comparative data and knowledge of the major health services approaches used internationally, so that students gain a global perspective of health systems. Both written assessments require students to provide some comparative analysis of their health systems with that utilized in other country health systems.

This unit requires that the student engage in seeking information from various sources, libraries, and the web and to analyse that data in two written assessment.

These students are postgraduate health professionals where there is a strong association to continuing professional development. The students are encouraged through discussion board on the learning platform to engage in professional associations and continue professional development.

Students are required to analyse health systems to solve problems of resource utilization for populations. They are required in both the written assignments to relate their answers to comparative analysis and problem solving relevant to their work context and to differing theoretical contexts.
