Unit Description

This unit describes the underlying causes of addictions including the biological, psychological, political, and social factors that affect First Nation Australians Aboriginals. The focus is on recovery using approaches that are suitable for First Nation families and communities. Cultural sensitivity is understood to be fundamental to helping people to recover from addictions.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate increased awareness and understanding of the causes and impact of addictions, including the biomedical, physical, psychological and social causes and effects;
  2. demonstrate an understanding of the history of addictions theory and treatment;
  3. identify the importance of adopting a culturally safe approach to community development work in this field;
  4. identify appropriate interventions for specific needs and the relevance of family versus community intervention; and
  5. describe culturally appropriate drug and alcohol abuse intervention programs.
