Unit Description

This unit introduces teachers to a range of practical historical tool and resources that can be utilised in the teaching of the Australian National Curriculum in History in the classroom. The new curriculum outlines a range of key knowledge to be developed and this unit allow teachers to focus on a curriculum topic of their choice and develop a suite of resources for direct implementation within the classroom. Students of the unit will be able to specialise in their teaching area as they work through a range of innovative approaches towards the teaching of history. Topics will be aligned with the National Curriculum and cover K-12 teaching needs.

Materials Textbook information will be displayed approximately 8 weeks prior to the commencement of the teaching period. Please note that textbook requirements may vary from one teaching period to the next.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate an understanding of a range of different historical resources, tools and methodologies that can be utilised in the classroom;
  2. articulate the relevance of historical periods to present day understandings; and
  3. align historical content and method with the requirements of the new National Curriculum in History.

Students will demonstrate a command of a significant body of knowledge relating to history at the postgraduate level. Discipline knowledge will be provided online and assessment tasks will engage students in developing activities suitable for the history classroom at either primary or secondary level.

Students will be taught communication skills through written and oral feedback on the essays for the unit. Students will learn valuable communication skills through participation in online discussions. Students will be assessed on the style of writing, clarity of writing, expression and development of ideas and referencing. Students will practise their communication skills through completing the online assessment tasks.

Students will study why and how history is characteristic of any society and how historical knowledge is fundamental to understanding ourselves and others and foundational to many other disciplines.

Students are encouraged to develop a range of research skills and to practise the assessment of resources and the utility of information in the development of new classroom resources in relation to the needs of the new Australian National Curriculum in History.

Students will develop their knowledge of history and its methodologies as well as how this is approached by the new Australian National Curriculum in History. Assessments will inlcude the development of a portfolio of resources and activities suitable for the classroom teaching of history with exegesis.

Unit content will include awareness of the ways that history is bound by powerful norms and contributes to the shaping of cultural and personal identity. The unit will teach students how History deepens our understanding of humanity, creativity, purposes and values.

Students will work collaboratively and network effectively to solve problems on the online discussion board taking the initiative and leading others in this environment. They will also negotiate and assert their own values and respect the values and contributions of others on the discussion board and in their own assessment tasks.
