Unit Description

Candidates complete an extended research dissertation on a History research topic of their choice (subject to availability of supervision) of the Honours program. They will work under the guidance of a supervisor to write a 15 000-17 000 word dissertation, based upon the student's own question and independent research. The involves formulating a research question and utilising higher order independent research skills and advanced analysis to combine a broad range of research materials. Candidates will also demonstrate a broad knowledge of the overall subject area and an understanding of methodological issues relating to History.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

6 Problem Solving
T: The writing of a dissertation will, by its very nature, teach students strategies for solving intricate problems that arise when thinking about social life and working out how to study it. These skills can be applied in a broad range of areas. A: Problem solving, especially as it relates to thinking about social life, will be directly assessed. P: A large part of this unit will involve the spelling out of intellectual problems and their resolution in theoretical and/or methodological terms.

7 Social Responsibility
All students writing dissertations in history must take into account issues of social responsibility. This is part of the topic selection process, the research and the final formulation of an argument.

Team work is part of the seminar process that all Honours students participate in as part of their candidature. At the dissertation writing stage this is apparent in the way they interact with supervisors and in their presentation of seminar papers.
