Unit Description

The unit examines historical philosophy and practice. The First Semester component involves an in-depth coverage of the philosophy and methodology of history, with particular emphasis on research practices at honours level. This provides the methodological basis for the honours dissertation as well as for further postgraduate study. The second semester component builds upon the theoretical work in First Semester. It uses a series of historical case studies to highlight important issues, with an emphasis on the handling of evidence and the practical application of theory and methodology in historical problem-solving.
