Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
-
relate the structure of the gastrointestinal system to its digestive and absorptive functions and describe the main metabolic pathways, their interrelationships and hormonal control;
-
list the factors that determine body water content, distinguish between electrolytes and non-electrolytes, and explain the importance of maintaining fluid-electrolyte and acid-base balance;
-
describe the components of the endocrine system and their functions, especially in the maintenance of homeostasis;
-
identify the cellular components of the nervous system and describe their major functions, especially in relation to information transmission;
-
identify the major anatomical components of the nervous system and describe their interrelationships, major functions and contributions to the maintenance of homeostasis;
-
apply knowledge of musculoskeletal system anatomy to bone growth and repair, joint function, muscle contraction, function and repair, and their roles in maintaining homeostasis.
