Unit Description

This unit aims to develop and improve all German language skills by building on and complementing the skills acquired in the intermediate German language units. While continuing to strengthen communicative competence in spoken German, the focus will be on grammar and translation skills for written language. Students' ability to appreciate cultural products of German speaking societies will also be further enhanced.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. read German texts at an advanced level;
  2. write German to an advanced level;
  3. understand spoken German to an advanced level of linguistic competence;
  4. speak German to an advanced level of linguistic competence;
  5. understand, appreciate and discuss aspects of German culture and society in German; and
  6. locate and navigate authentic websites in German.

In this unit students will learn to communicate effectively in the various registers of German. In class, and via the Discussion Board for off-campus students, learners will also discuss linguistic probelms in English, thus furthering their overall communication skills. 		True True True

Through reading texts from a variety of sources, students will gain a greater understanding of the cultures of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, which will require them to see their own cultures in a global context. 		True True True

As part of this unit, students will use CALL programs. The unit will also require students to use email and the Discussion Board. 		True True
5 Life-Long Learning
Learning a language develops skills such as attention to detail and methodical approaches which can be applied to other learning situations. 		True
