Unit Description

This unit aims to introduce students to the study of modern German film. Discussion of the films will consider such topics as the relationship between the film and the historical and sociological context which it portrays and in which it was produced. The films will also be discussed in terms of the way in which they present their subject matter, that is with regard to issues such as style, imagery, symbolism and mise-en-scène. This unit is available not only to those with a background in German language studies, but also to those with an interest in film, as the films will be screened in German with English subtitles where necessary, and the assessment items can be done in either German or English.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. competently understand modern German film;
  2. understand cultural and societal differences in German speaking countries as portrayed in film;
  3. critically discuss narrative devices, such as style, symbolism, imagery, narrative perspective etc and filmic devices (mise-en-scene, music, colour, film stock); and
  4. use research tools and will have further developed the skill of essay writing.
