Unit Description

Germany is the largest economy in the European union and one of the most dynamic, highly developed nations in the world. This unit is intended for learners of German who wish to speak, read and write German for work and professional purposes or who intend to live and/or work for a time in a German speaking country. It develops competency in speaking, writing, listening and understanding German at an upper intermediated to advanced level of proficiency. In addition, it further expands learners? knowledge about the German working environment and culture.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. speak, read, understand and write competently in German in the context of the workplace;
  2. recognise and use different registers of the target language; and
  3. demonstrate an understanding of the conventions in German workplace and formal situations.

In this unit students will learn to communicate effectively in the various registers of German. In class, and for off-campus students via the Discussion Board, students will also discuss linguistic problems in English, thus furthering their overall communication skills.

Through reading texts from a variety of sources, students will gain a deeper understanding of the cultures of Germany, Austria and Switzerland which will require them to see their own cultures in a global context.

As part of this unit, students will use CALL programs. The unit will also reqauire the students to use email and the Discussion Board.
