Unit Description

Learning German can enrich your life and your chances of success in both your work and private life. This unit is designed for students with no or little previous knowledge of German. The emphasis throughout the unit is on the acquisition of the basic language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Aspects of contemporary German culture and society are also discussed.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. hold basic conversations in German and read basic texts;
  2. apply basic grammatical structures in speech and writing; and
  3. show basic knowledge of German cultural norms and German society.

In this unit the students will acquire the ability to communicate in and understand simple German. Knowledge of Discipline is assessed in all assessment tasks.

In this unit students will learn to communicate effectively in the target language German. In class, and for off-campus students via the Discussion Board, students will also discuss linguistic problems in English, thus furthering their overall communication skills. These skills are assessed in all assessment tasks.

The unit exposes students to foreign cultures, viz. the cultures of Germany, Austria and Switzerland and requires them to see their own cultures in a global context.

As part of the unit, students will use CALL programs. The unit will also require the students to use email and the Discussion Board.

Learning a language develops skills such as attention to detail and methodical approaches which can be applied to other learning situations.
