| Unit Description |
The unit examines the policy implications of contemporary trends in fertility, mortality and migration and how these trends are linked to processes of social, political, economic and environmental change. In addition, the relationships between demographic variables, place and population health are examined. While the focus is primarily on Australia, all major demographic trends are interpreted within an appropriate international context. Students will develop conceptual and practical skills - including familiarity and experience with the use of geographic information systems (GIS) for mapping population data - necessary to conduct population-related research. Assessment is via a critical literature review, one essay and a research report.
