Unit Description

This unit investigates the relationship between humans and the landscape and the way power is exercised by places as well as by people. By studying this unit you will examine dispossession, exile, belonging, globalization, sustainability and indigenous relationships to place. You will explore how people comprehend themselves and the world around them, and how this influences their interactions with place. You will encounter how you yourself are connected to place and the consequences of this connection for place management. You will discover the power of place planning, land use and land use change. You will be supported in your learning in this unit by structured group discussion, unit readings, assignment work and online media.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate a critical understanding of key concepts regarding the relationship between humans and places (including issues such as belonging, exile and dispossession, inclusion and exclusion, globalization, sustainability and Indigenous relationships to place), of the way power may be exercised and the influences on human behaviour in relation to place and place usage (including the effects of perception, norms and culture), and different approaches to thinking about and making decisions about places (including decisions about land use and land use change)
  2. demonstrate a critical and self-aware understanding of the personal impact of place connections as well as the potential impacts on place of people?s connections to place;
  3. demonstrate advanced problem solving abilities, analytical capacities and research, report writing, group participation, communication and critical thinking skills; and
  4. demonstrate an enduring curiosity and high capacity for continuing engagement in the field.
