Unit Description

Illustrated with case studies from Asia, this unit promotes understanding of realities of life in developing nations. Emphasising change over time, causes of poverty, factors affecting development and theoretical understandings about development are examined. Other issues considered include population growth, food security, environmental sustainability, development assistance, feminisation of poverty, and culture and development.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. understand the complexity and diversity of issues confronting the world's poorer nations;
  2. understand the nature and causes of differential patterns of development within and between nations. (Drawing on case studies from Asia and emphasising change over time, this includes examination of the significance of resources, population, environment and culture in shaping patterns of development); and
  3. understand definitions of development, development theories and of varied strategies employed in attempting to foster development.
