Unit Description

Planet Earth is undergoing far-reaching ecological changes which will continue to have profound impacts upon human activities. The complex causes and progress of such changes as they affect land and water resources, forests, biodiversity, the atmosphere and cities are considered. Human responses to environmental changes, and ways in which rural sustainability might be achieved, are explored.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate an adequate degree of knowledge on past, present and future global environmental issues;
  2. demonstrate an acceptable level of understanding of the spatial and temporal magnitude of global environmental issues;
  3. demonstrate an appreciation on the role of human society behind the emergence of global environmental issues;
  4. demonstrate an understanding on the concept of 'sustainability' and the associated conflicts with its application to combat relevant global environmental issues;
  5. demonstrate proficiency in foundation skills as they apply to communication and research in geography.
