Unit Description

This unit deals with topical issues such as land use issues, geological hazards, resource management and human impact on the environment. Topics covered include volcanic hazards, earthquakes, tsunami, ground water resources, mineral resources and mining, soil resources and aspects of climate.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate an understanding of the geological processes and their controls and influences on many aspects of environmental science;
  2. develop independent research skills including assessment of source reliability and data evaluation;
  3. demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively through report writing, and developing skills in referencing; and
  4. use geological concepts in applications regarding community-based, and industry-based issues.
