Unit Description

Unit evaluates the basic processes leading to the formation of ore deposits, ore mineralogy and hydrothermal alteration, environmental consequences of mining and mineral economics. Practical work involves study of ore minerals, hydrothermal alteration, representative mineral deposit sample suites, environmental consequences of resource extraction. Includes field excursions.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. explain basic concepts of ore formation for select ore deposit types;
  2. identify different styles of alteration and mineralisation from hand samples and from field context;
  3. explain the geologic plate tectonic context of the selected ore deposit types;
  4. express an understanding of the geologic processes which produced the mineralogical changes observed in different rocks; and
  5. communicate effectively their observations via written reports and exams.

They will be presented with readings, lectures and applied practicals? which will help them evaluate their understanding of ore forming processes and ability to identify alteration and mineralisation styles. Students should be able to apply logical, critical and creative thinking to problems relating to mineralogical and elemental zonation in ore deposits and recognise the predictive nature of such zonation. They will be assessed on this knowledge in practical tests and exams.
