Unit Description

This core language unit aims to bring students to a point where they may competently read and understand, and accurately write and speak, an advanced level of French. The unit also includes the study of a French literary text to contextualise this language acquisition.

Materials Textbook information will be displayed approximately 8 weeks prior to the commencement of the teaching period. Please note that textbook requirements may vary from one teaching period to the next.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. recognise, analyse and use a wide range of grammatical structures in French;
  2. communicate in French, both written and oral, more effectively and with greater accuracy than previously, using structures and vocabulary learnt whilst studying the prescribed texts and films;
  3. demonstrate an increased understanding of spoken French;
  4. demonstrate a substantial awareness of the historical and socio-cultural context and terminology in which the texts and/or films under analysis were produced;
  5. argue a case in written French in answer to a question based on the assigned texts; and
  6. use monolingual and bilingual dictionaries to search for meanings, synonyms and nuances of meaning.
