Unit Description

This core language unit is a sequel to the second-year language strand. It aims to advance competence in reading, understanding, writing and speaking French. The unit also includes the study of a French literary text to contexualise this language acquisition.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. recognise, analyse and use a wide range of grammatical structures in French;
  2. communicate in French, both written and oral, more effectively and with greater accuracy than previously, using structures and vocabulary learnt whilst studying the prescribed texts and films;
  3. demonstrate an increased understanding of spoken French;
  4. demonstrate a substantial awareness of the historical and socio-cultural context and terminology in which the texts and/or films under analysis were produced;
  5. argue a case in written French in answer to a question based on the assigned texts; and
  6. use monolingual and bilingual dictionaries to search for meanings, synonyms and nuances of meaning.
