Notes

Native or background speakers of French should normally enter at this level or higher.

Students must own or have access to a CD player. Students must also have regular access to the Internet with an up-to-date browser, capable of supporting the 'iLrn: Heinle Learning Center'. Off-campus students must submit oral assignments via mp3, CD or cassette.

Unit Description

This first trimester core language unit is the sequel to the introductory first year French units. It is also offered as the entry point to the French language sequence for HSC Continuers (70+%) or those with equivalent prior knowledge. This unit aims to bring students to a point where they may competently read, understand, write and speak an intermediate level of French.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. use complex sentence structures in several tenses for prose writing;
  2. use bilingual dictionaries;
  3. translate sentences as necessary at intermediate level;
  4. read excerpts from French and Francophone literature;
  5. demonstrate aural comprehension and oral production of French, spoken in a variety of contexts at a reasonable level of competence; and
  6. demonstrate an appreciation of cultural diversity and cross-cultural communication.
