Unit Description

The unit will introduce students to the national cinemas of Europe. Films will be viewed as cultural products, that is, expressions of a given culture which have found their way on to celluloid, rather than on to the stage or the printed page. It will extend students' knowledge of the culture whose language and literature they may be studying. All films will be in English or have English subtitles, and students will not be required to bring to the unit any prior knowledge of national cinema or of the mechanics of film as a medium.
