Unit Description

This unit focuses on a range of novels in English from North America, Australia and Britain in the period from the 1970s to the present. It aims to equip students with the background and literary critical skills to enable them to explore questions of history, time and memory raised by these works. We will discuss questions of literary form, such as the way in which different kinds of texts experiment with narrative, and the way they negotiate the relationship between past and present. The unit also provides opportunities for students to examine broader philosphical, ethical and historical issues.

3 Global Perspectives
Global perspective and inter-cultural competence will be taught, assessed and practised through the learning activities of the unit, including use of advisory materials, and in the assessment tasks. The unit content deals with twentieth and twenty-first century America, Australia and Britain, including the impact of key global events (the world wars, 9/11), their literary representations, and the impact on the human subject.

4 Information Literacy
While these attributes are not specifically taught or assessed as part of the unit, students will use electronic information resources to research and complete the written assessment task. References to electronic resources will be provided in advisory materials and students will be expected to use basic research and retrieval skills to pursue these. Students will also be asked to prepare a bibliography as part of essay-writing.

7 Social Responsibility
The content of the unit is largely concerned with individual and social experience within the contemporary period, and how this experience relates to the past and the present. Students in this unit will be asked to reflect upon how the ethics of responsibility to self and society raised by the texts translates in their own lives, including, respect for others in the online and face-to-face teaching environment.
