| Learning Outcomes (LO) |
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

show improved skills in reading and writing that are appropriate to the study of English and English education;

demonstrate a familiarity with a range of contemporary critical approaches to understanding the processes involved in reading and writing, and theories concerning readers' reception of texts;

refer to a range of historical and contemporary examples from practising writers (novelists/critics/journalists/poets) that explore aspects of reading and writing;
-
understand some of the practical and theoretical aspects of writing and composition across a variety of descriptive, analytical and persuasive modes and genres (essays, autobiographical accounts, literature, reviews, interviews and other pieces);
-
develop enhanced critical and communicative skills that will be of academic and professional benefit; and
-
develop an awareness of social, ethical and professional issues arising in the practice of writing for publication.

Whilst there is no online component of the unit, students will need to possess research skills; using information tools through the library and through the internet, will benefit them in this unit.

Clear and professional communication, competent research skills and an understanding of the importance of presentation are all important skills that students will develop through this unit. These are assessed through the writing tasks and the major project.

As for any literary or theoretical unit, problem solving is a major necessary skill. Students will apply logical, creative and critical thinking to issues based on the theory and practice of reading, writing and the professional role of the writer.

The unit will address the ethical responsibilities of writers. Generally, students will need to demonstrate academic honesty in their writing.
