Unit Description

This unit offers an overview of publishing and editing in print and online media, with a focus on the Australian context in a changing international publishing environment. It enables students to enhance their skills in creative, professional and academic writing by gaining practical and theoretical knowledge of editing and publishing. The unit examines different sectors of publishing (industry, in-house, etc), modes of production (books, magazines, etc) and modes of writing and editing (generating copy, sub-editing, proofreading). It covers questions of drafting, layout and design; desktop publishing; and legal and ethical issues of professional practice.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. understand different publishing sectors and production modes;
  2. apply independently an advanced understanding of the various editing principles and techniques studied for print and online publication;
  3. show knowledge of the relations between editors, writers and readers and the ethical and legal dimensions of editing and publishing;
  4. understand the changing technological and cultural contexts of publishing and editing practices; and
  5. manage and complete a large-scale project integrating multiple tasks of formatting and editing.
