Unit Description

This unit begins with completion of a sports coaching accreditation. Once accredited, the students engage in a professional experience designed specifically to apply their learning. Through the processes of formal accreditation and professional experience, the students will gain documentary evidence of both professional competence to coach sport and successful coaching practice.

  1. apply general coaching principles to sport-specific contexts;
  2. provide evidence of successful sports coaching practice;

2 Communication Skills
Specific communication skills form part of the readings and assessment of the Intermediate Coaching General Principles course. The field based component of Assignment Two requires students to apply a range of communication strategies to organise, deliver and evaluate sports coaching sessions. The prescribed text includes specific information related to the following communication skills: giving clear instructions, checking for understanding, non-verbal cues, giving feedback, listening skills, questioning skills, negotiation and others. Communication challenges encountered during professional experiences of sports coaching are raised and discussed via the blackboard discussions of the LMS site and where appropriate practiced in the field (i.e. professional experience of Sports Coaching). The attribute is practiced in two settings. Firstly, via the discussion boards of the LMS as authentic problem solving scenarios. Secondly, when coaching sport with an athlete or sports team in partial fulfillment of a unit requirement.

6 Problem Solving
Professional experience component affords opportunity to experience problems of the profession first hand and resolve them collaboratively using tools available via a Learning Management System and is assessed through the Journal of Coaching Experience.

8 Team Work
Pathways of learning in the unit encourage sports coaching approaches utilizing teams of coaches including mentoring. Online discussion boards are used to build and support communities of practice that work together to resolve authentic challenges sports coaching. This is assessed through activities included in the Coaching Principles Worksheet and the Journal of Coaching Experience.
