Unit Description

This unit is concerned with analysis and instruction in a variety of physical activities. All pedagogical approaches to the teaching and coaching of these activities, appropriate to school-aged children, will be examined in the unit. This involves both theoretical and practical aspects of these areas, however, there is a greater emphasis on practice.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. organise efficient and effective practice sessions;
  2. analyse and correcting athletic performance;
  3. facilitate the development of sports skills by clear instruction and demonstration;
  4. minimise potentially unsafe and dangerous practices and know what to do if an athlete is injured.

Knowledge of safe and effective sports coaching in a range of physical activities will be taught through on line discussions, readings and observation of coaches. It will be assessed in both assessment tasks.

2 Communication Skills
Students will be taught communication skills through written and oral feedback on assignment tasks. Students studying off-campus will learn valuable communication skills through on?line discussion, organizing coach observation sessions and delivery of planned session. Students will be assessed on the style, clarity and expression of their writing and development of Ideas and referencing. Students will practice their communication skills through completing both the assignment tasks.

3 Global Perspectives
Students are exposed to the variety of implications of diverse multicultural backgrounds necessary for implementing effective coaching.

4 Information Literacy
Students will be taught, and directed, to relevant sports coaching literature and how to assess its validity. Students will be assessed (through both assignments) on their ability to identify relevant literature, and on their ability to critically analyse the literature.

5 Life-Long Learning
Through completing the assignments students will be provided with the necessary lifelong skills to be able to research, write and discuss issues relevant to sports coaching in the community. These skills can be transferred to any discipline, and will be useful in any research positions. These attributes will be assessed in all of the assignments (written skills; analytical skills). In addition, students who contribute to on line discussion will develop their understanding of a topic through group activities.

Students conceptualise problems and formulate a range of solutions as they observe, analyse and plan for effective coaching practice and are assessed on the evaluation of their choices within their planned coaching sessions.

Students appreciate the social and ethical implications of their actions. This attribute is embedded in the unit as the students work through their professional responsibility of inclusion for all athletes.
