Unit Description

Educational environments can be greatly enhanced by the creation of learning communities based on computer mediated communication (CMC), particularly web mediated. This unit assists educators to construct an understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of such learning communities and develop the skills necessary to plan, establish and maintain a web mediated learning community. Students will be required to investigate the nature and implementation of learning communities, participate in and evaluate particular learning communities, and plan a learning community. This unit will be delivered online. Access to the Internet is essential.

Materials Text information will be published prior to commencement of the teaching period.
Disclaimer Unit information may be subject to change prior to commencement of the teaching period.
Assessment Assessment information will be published prior to commencement of the teaching period.
Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. recognise, describe and evaluate learning communities-based on the theoretical and conceptual frameworks that support their design for educational purposes;
  2. articulate an understanding of the models and tools used for web mediated learning community design;
  3. make critical decisions, based on appropriate theories of human interaction and motivation in educational settings, about facilitating cooperative and collaborative learning in human/human interactions that are mediated by computers either synchronously and/or asynchronously;
  4. identify issues associated with both current and emerging technologies as they relate to initiating and maintaining learning communities;
  5. implement understanding of the models, tools and issues involved, to plan a web based learning community; and
  6. evaluate the pedagogical and technical aspects of a web mediated learning community based on theoretical underpinnings.
