Unit Description

This unit examines how digital technology can be used to create accessible eLearning environments. Students will explore a range of software and hardware solutions that can be used to address potential barriers to learning. Students will learn how to employ principles of Universal Design for Learning to support learning. This is with the aim of creating accessible eLearning environments that meet the special needs of an increasingly diverse range of learners.

Materials Text information will be published prior to commencement of the teaching period.
Disclaimer Unit information may be subject to change prior to commencement of the teaching period.
Assessment Assessment information will be published prior to commencement of the teaching period.
Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. critically discuss the accessibility issues which arise in order to meet the needs of a diverse range of learners;
  2. identify potential barriers to learning in a variety of contexts;
  3. justify why digital technologies can be used to address isues of accessibility;
  4. apply the principles of Universal Design for Learning; and
  5. create a Universal Design solution for either an educational or training context.

Graduate Attributes (GA)
Attribute Taught Assessed Practised
1 Knowledge of a Discipline
Through their own and directed reading, students will gain knowledge in the area of accessibility and the application of this knowledge to various contexts. Students will be assessed upon their knowledge of discipline through their responses in the two assessment tasks.
True True True
2 Communication Skills
Students will demonstrate their written communication skills by articulating their understanding of the content area through their interaction with other students in the unit and by the completion of the assessment tasks.
True True
3 Global Perspectives
Students will learn how to create learning environments that meet the needs of an increasingly diverse range of learners with increasingly diverse needs. Through unit content and the two written assessment tasks students will be encouraged to move beyond their current conceptions and learners and learning to adopt a broader and more inclusive set of views.

4 Information Literacy
Through assessment and online unit activities students will experience and consider the multimodal nature of digital technology. Activities will have students reflecting upon the literacies required for the successful interaction with each of these respective modes

5 Life-Long Learning
Accessibility is built upon that notion that learning should be available to all learners irrespective of their personal circumstances. This is in resonance with the idea that learning should be life-long and not restricted to any particular class of learners.
True True
6 Problem Solving
The unit content and assessment in both assignments centre around the construction of eLearning environments as a solution to the barriers to learning. Students will adopt a problem solving approach by defining the needs of a particular group of learners and creating a unique e-learning environment in response to these needs.
True True True
7 Social Responsibility
Students will be asked to consider the social and ethical responsibilities associated with an inclusive education agenda. Students will be provided with and assessed upon the skills required to create eLearning environments that meet the needs of the widest possible range of participants.

8 Team Work
Students will be given the opportunity to share and develop their understanding of the content material through their interactions with others within the Virtual Learning Environment.
