Unit Description

The purpose of the unit is to develop an awareness of current developments in Information and Communication Technologies from a broad historical and social perspective. The implications of these developments for society in general and for professional practice in particular, are considered in some depth including ethical, social and technical issues that arise with the use of such technologies. This unit, delivered online, is aimed specifically at professionals who wish to be more aware of technological developments and how these developments impact on professional practice. Access to the Internet is essential.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. describe the origins and nature of Information and Communication Technologies;
  2. apply knowledge of the nature of Information and Communication Technologies to professional practice;
  3. understand the variety of applications of Information and Communication Technologies and assess their impact;
  4. argue the ethical, social and technical issues associated with the widespread use of Information and Communication Technologies in professional practice;
  5. critically analyse the implications of globalisation, cultural diversity and people with special needs on Information and Communication Technologies based environments; and
  6. demonstrate an understanding of the implications of innovations in Information and Communication Technologies for his or her own area of professional practice.
